Breeding Season Management: A Month-by-Month Plan

Why a Breeding Plan Matters

Breeding season is the most financially important period on a beef cattle operation. Every decision you make here , which bulls to use, which cows to breed, when to start and stop , affects your cash flow 9-12 months later when calves hit the ground.

A successful breeding season doesn't happen by accident. It starts months before the first cow is exposed to a bull. Here's a month-by-month plan that works for fall-calving and spring-calving operations.

6 Months Before Breeding: Bull Preparation

Half a year before breeding starts, your bulls need to be ready. This means:

  • Breeding soundness exam (BSE). Have your vet evaluate every bull. This includes a physical exam, semen evaluation, and scrotal circumference measurement. A bull that fails the BSE should not be in your breeding pasture.
  • Vaccinations and boosters. Bulls need the same base vaccines as your cows , IBR, BVD, Lepto, and vibrio. Get them current at least 30 days before breeding.
  • Nutrition. Bulls need to be in body condition score 6 (on a 1-9 scale) by breeding time. Under-conditioned bulls have lower libido and poorer semen quality. Start supplementing 3-4 months before breeding if needed.
  • Footing and soundness. A lame bull can't breed effectively. Trim feet, treat any injuries, and cull bulls with chronic lameness.

3 Months Before Breeding: Cow Preparation

Your cows need to be in breeding condition too. The target is body condition score 5-6 at calving, which means they should be gaining condition going into the breeding season.

  • Body condition scoring. Walk through the herd and score every cow. Thin cows (BCS 4 or below) need supplemental nutrition to cycle back quickly after calving.
  • Mineral program. Ensure cows have access to a quality mineral supplement. Selenium, copper, and zinc are critical for reproductive health.
  • Vaccinations. Pre-breeding vaccinations (IBR, BVD, Lepto, vibrio) should be given 30-45 days before breeding starts. This gives the immune system time to build protection before the stress of breeding.
  • Cull the bottoms. If you have open cows from last year, old cows with bad udders, or cows with chronic health problems, now is the time to sell them. Don't feed a cow through another breeding season if she's unlikely to produce a calf.

1 Month Before Breeding: Final Preparations

  • Final bull check. Re-examine bulls for any injuries or health issues that have developed since the BSE.
  • Pasture preparation. Ensure breeding pastures have adequate fence, water, and forage. The bull needs room to work, and cows need nutrition.
  • Synchronize if using AI. If you're using artificial insemination, start your synchronization protocol 10-14 days before your scheduled AI date.
  • Plan your bull-to-cow ratio. For natural service, one mature bull (3-5 years old) can handle 25-30 cows. Younger bulls (2 years old) should be limited to 15-20 cows.

Breeding Season: The 60-90 Day Window

The ideal breeding season is 60-90 days. A shorter breeding season produces a more uniform calf crop, which means more consistent weaning weights and a cleaner marketing window.

Week 1-2: Turnout

  • Turn bulls out with the cows. Watch for the first heats , you want to see activity within the first 48-72 hours.
  • Record the start date of breeding season. This is critical for calculating expected calving dates later.
  • Check bulls daily for the first week. Make sure they're mating properly and not injured.

Week 3-6: Peak Activity

  • Heat detection. Watch for standing heat , the cow stands still when the bull mounts her, or when another cow mounts her. Heat lasts 12-18 hours.
  • Record heats. Note which cows are cycling and when. This helps you predict calving dates and identify cows that aren't cycling.
  • Watch for problems. Cows that are repeatedly mounted but not conceiving may have reproductive issues. Flag them for a vet check after the breeding season.

Week 7-12: Wind-Down

  • Heat activity should decrease as most cows have been bred.
  • Any cow that hasn't been seen in heat by week 8-9 may already be bred , or may have a problem.
  • Plan to remove bulls at the end of your breeding window. This keeps your calving season tight.

Post-Breeding: Confirm and Prepare

60 Days After Breeding: Pregnancy Check

  • Pregnancy checking is non-negotiable. You need to know which cows are pregnant and which are open. Open cows cost you money every day they're in the herd without producing a calf.
  • Your vet can pregnancy check via rectal palpation (30-45 days post-breeding) or ultrasound (25-30 days post-breeding).
  • Record the results for every cow. This data tells you which bulls settled which cows, which cows are most fertile, and when to expect calves.

90 Days After Breeding: Nutrition Adjustment

  • Confirmed pregnant cows need increasing nutrition as pregnancy progresses.
  • In the third trimester, fetal growth accelerates. Cows need more protein and energy.
  • Separate thin cows from the group and provide supplemental feed if needed.

Tracking Your Breeding Data

The data you collect during breeding season is valuable for making better decisions next year. Track:

  • Which bull settled which cow. This helps you identify your best bulls and avoid inbreeding.
  • Cycling dates. Cows that cycle early in the season are more fertile than late cyclers.
  • Conception rates. What percentage of your herd settled in the first cycle? The second?
  • Calving dates. When calves hit the ground relative to when you expected them.

Common Breeding Season Mistakes
