Key Design Principles

Curve the Alley

Cattle naturally circle back when pressured. A curved alley uses this instinct — the curve hides the destination, keeping cattle moving forward. Straight chutes cause balking because cattle can see the end.

Solid Sides

Use solid panels on the inside of curves and along alleys. Cattle won't walk past distractions they can see. Solid sides reduce balking and keep cattle moving forward.

Non-Slip Flooring

Every surface cattle walk on should provide traction. Grooved concrete, rubber matting, or packed gravel. Slippery surfaces cause injuries, balking, and slow processing.

Escape Routes

Always have a way out for the handler. Never get between a cow and the only exit. The handler's safety is the top priority in any facility design.
