Why Water Matters More Than You Think

Water is the most important nutrient for cattle , and the one most often taken for granted. A cow can lose 20% of her body weight in fat and survive. She can lose 10% of her body water and die.

Inadequate water intake reduces feed intake, slows growth, lowers milk production, and impairs reproduction. A dehydrated cow doesn't eat well, doesn't gain weight, and doesn't breed back.

How Much Water Do Cattle Need?

Water requirements vary dramatically by season, production stage, and temperature. Here are the general guidelines:

Dry Cows (Non-Lactating)

  • Cool weather (below 50°F): 10-15 gallons per day
  • Moderate weather (50-80°F): 15-20 gallons per day
  • Hot weather (above 80°F): 20-30 gallons per day

Lactating Cows

Lactation doubles water requirements. A milking cow needs significantly more water than a dry cow:

  • Cool weather: 20-25 gallons per day

Factors That Increase Water Needs

  • Temperature: For every degree above 70°F, water intake increases by about 1 gallon per 100 lbs of body weight.
  • Humidity: High humidity reduces evaporative cooling (sweating), making cattle drink more.
  • Salt intake: Cattle that consume salt or mineral blocks drink more water to compensate.
  • Dry feed: Cattle eating dry hay drink more than those on lush pasture (which contains 70-80% water).
  • Exercise: Cattle that walk long distances to water drink more when they arrive , and may not drink enough if the walk is too far.

Water Quality Matters

Cattle will avoid water that tastes bad, smells wrong, or is contaminated. Common water quality issues:

  • Sulfur: High sulfur (rotten egg smell) reduces water intake. Above 500 ppm is problematic.
  • Salt (TDS): Total dissolved solids above 5,000 ppm reduce intake. Above 10,000 ppm may cause refusal.
  • Nitrates: Contamination from fertilizer or manure. Above 100 ppm is dangerous.
  • Blue-green algae: Toxic to cattle. Can cause death within hours. Fence off ponds with algae blooms.
  • Stagnant water: Stagnant ponds grow bacteria and algae. Moving or fresh water is always preferred.

Water System Design

Trough Sizing

Size your troughs to handle peak demand. The general rule: 3-4 inches of trough space per animal. A 10-cow herd needs at least 30-40 inches of trough length.

For automatic-fill troughs, the fill rate should exceed the consumption rate during peak watering times (typically morning and evening).

Placement

  • Within 800 feet of grazing area. Cattle shouldn't have to walk more than a quarter mile for water. Beyond that, they drink less and gain less weight.
  • On high ground. Avoid low areas that flood or become muddy.
  • Near handling facilities. Water at the chute or corral makes processing easier.

Winter Considerations

  • Heaters or de-icers. In freezing climates, keep water above 40°F. Cattle drink less ice-cold water.
  • Break ice daily. A frozen trough means no water. Check twice daily in freezing weather.
  • Insulate pipes. Bury water lines below the frost line or insulate above-ground pipes.

Signs of Dehydration

  • Reduced feed intake
  • Dry mouth and nose
  • Skin tent test (pinch skin on neck , if it stays tented, dehydration is likely)
  • Dark, concentrated urine
  • Reduced milk production
  • Lethargy

How to Monitor Water Intake

If you have a meter on your water supply, track daily usage. Divide total usage by the number of head to get per-animal consumption. Compare to expected requirements.

If water intake drops suddenly, check for: frozen water, contaminated water, pump failure, or trough damage. A sudden drop in water intake is often the first sign of a health problem.
