Why Grazing Management Matters
How you graze your cattle directly affects your land, your wallet, and your herd's health. Poor grazing management leads to overgrazed pastures, erosion, weed pressure, and higher feed costs. Good grazing management builds soil, improves forage, and reduces the need for expensive supplemental feed.

Continuous vs. Rotational Grazing
Continuous Grazing
Cattle have access to the entire pasture for the entire season. This is the simplest system but the least efficient. Cattle overgraze their preferred plants, underutilize less palatable species, and damage soil with constant traffic in the same areas.
Forage utilization in continuous grazing is typically 30-40%. That means 60-70% of the grass you're growing is wasted.
Rotational Grazing
Divide your pasture into smaller paddocks and move cattle between them on a schedule. This allows grazed plants to rest and regrow before being grazed again. Forage utilization jumps to 60-80%.
The math is simple: if your pasture grows 4,000 lbs of forage per acre and you utilize 40% (continuous), you're feeding 1,600 lbs. If you utilize 70% (rotational), you're feeding 2,800 lbs , 75% more feed from the same land.
Setting Up a Rotational System
Paddock Number and Size
The ideal number of paddocks depends on your rest period goal:
- 8-12 paddocks: Minimum for a functional rotation. Each paddock gets 1-3 days of grazing, then 28-45 days of rest.
- 20-30 paddocks: More paddocks = shorter grazing periods = more even utilization = better rest.
- Paddock size: Divide your total grazing acres by the number of paddocks. For a 100-acre pasture with 20 paddocks, each paddock is 5 acres.
Fencing
You don't need permanent fencing between every paddock. Single-strand polywire on step-in posts is cheap, portable, and effective. Install permanent perimeter fencing and use temporary interior fencing for flexibility.
Water
Every paddock needs water access. Options include:
- Permanent water lines with troughs in each paddock
- Portable water tanks connected to hydrants
- Existing ponds or streams (protect riparian areas with fencing)
Stock Density and Grazing Period
Stock density is how many animals per acre in a paddock. Higher density for shorter time produces more even grazing:
- Low density (1-2 acres/head): Cattle selectively graze, leaving some plants overgrazed and others untouched.
- Moderate density (0.5-1 acre/head): More even grazing, better utilization.
- High density (0.1-0.5 acres/head): Mob grazing. Very even utilization, but requires more infrastructure and management.
The key is matching density to grazing period. High density for 1-2 days, then move. Low density for a week, then move. Both can work if managed correctly.
Rest Period: The Most Important Number
The rest period is how long a paddock rests before cattle return. This is the single most important factor in pasture health:
- Too short (under 21 days): Plants don't recover. Root systems shrink. Weeds take over.
- Ideal (30-45 days in growing season): Plants fully recover, root systems deepen, forage quality stays high.
- Too long (over 60 days): Plants mature and lose nutritional value. Mature grass is like straw , low protein, low energy.
In the growing season, target 30-45 days of rest. In dormant season, rest periods are less critical because plants aren't actively growing.
Monitoring Your Pasture
Don't just move cattle on a calendar. Watch the pasture:
- Stubble height: Graze down to 4-6 inches, then move. Don't graze below 3 inches , it damages the plant's recovery ability.
- Recovery rate: In spring, plants regrow fast (rest can be 21-28 days). In summer heat, regrowth slows (rest may need 45-60 days).
- Weed pressure: If weeds are increasing, you may be overgrazing. Weeds thrive where desirable grass is weakened.
Seasonal Grazing Strategies
Spring
Start grazing when grass is 6-8 inches tall. Graze down to 4 inches. Move when the paddock is grazed evenly. Spring grass is high-quality , your cattle may not need supplemental feed.
Summer
As temperatures rise, grass growth slows. Extend rest periods. Monitor for drought stress. Consider stockpiling grass for fall by letting some paddocks rest for 60+ days.
Fall
Graze stockpiled forage. If you've managed rest periods well, you should have standing forage that extends your grazing season by 30-60 days, reducing winter feed costs.
Winter
In most regions, cattle are on stored feed (hay, silage) in winter. But in mild climates, stockpiled fescue or other cool-season grasses can provide winter grazing.

The difference between continuous and well-managed rotational grazing is significant:

- Reduced hay needs: Less hay = lower winter feed bills.
