How to Store Feed Properly to Avoid Waste

The Hidden Cost of Poor Feed Storage

You spent good money on that hay. Or that grain. Or that silage. And if you're storing it wrong, you're watching a portion of that investment rot, mold, or blow away before it ever reaches your cattle.

Feed waste from poor storage ranges from 5-30%, depending on the method. On a 100-cow operation spending $15,000 on winter feed, that's $750-$4,500 wasted before you even feed a bale.

Hay Storage

Round Bales

  • Indoors (best): A barn or shed keeps hay dry and preserves quality. Indoor storage waste is 2-5%.
  • Outdoor under cover: A simple three-sided shed or roof over round bales reduces weather damage. Waste: 5-10%.
  • Outdoor uncovered: The worst option. Top bales lose 20-30% of their nutritional value to weather. Bottom bales rot in the mud. Waste: 15-30%.

If you can't store all your hay indoors, at minimum use a gravel pad with a roof. The investment pays for itself within 2-3 years in reduced waste.

Small Square Bales

Even more susceptible to weather damage than round bales because of the higher surface-area-to-volume ratio. Always store indoors or under cover. Waste from outdoor storage can exceed 40%.

Hay Storage Tips

  • Elevate off the ground. Use pallets, gravel, or a concrete pad. Hay on bare ground wicks up moisture and rots from the bottom.
  • Ventilate. Don't stack bales tight against walls. Leave 2-3 feet of air space for circulation.
  • Stack round bales correctly. Stack in a pyramid (3 on bottom, 2 on top) or in single rows. Don't stack more than 2 high without proper support.
  • Use net wrap or twine properly. Remove net wrap before feeding. Leaving it on can cause digestive issues.

Silage and Haylage Storage

  • Bunker silos: Pack silage tightly to eliminate air. Cover with plastic and tires to keep the seal. Open from one end only , expose a fresh face each day.
  • Baleage: Wrap round bales in plastic immediately after baling. Check for punctures or tears. A compromised wrap lets air in and causes spoilage.
  • Upright silos: The best option for large operations. Minimal waste (2-5%), but expensive to build.

Grain Storage

Bins and Cribs

  • Moisture content is critical. Grain must be dried to safe moisture levels before bin storage: corn to 13-14%, wheat to 12-13%, barley to 12-13%.
  • Clean bins between batches. Old grain at the bottom spoils new grain on top of it.
  • Monitor temperature. Hot spots in grain bins indicate spoilage. Use temperature cables to monitor.

Outdoor Grain Storage

If you must store grain outdoors, use a sealed bag or covered pile. Outdoor grain storage is the last resort , moisture and pests cause rapid deterioration.

Mineral and Supplement Storage

  • Keep dry. Mineral blocks and loose mineral absorb moisture and clump or dissolve. Store in a dry, covered area.
  • Check expiration dates. Mineral supplements lose potency over time. Use within the recommended timeframe.
  • Separate from other feeds. Some minerals can interact with other feeds and reduce effectiveness.

Feed Waste at the Feeder

Even with perfect storage, you can waste feed at the feeder:

  • Use feeders. Feeding hay on the ground wastes 20-40%. A ring feeder or bunk feeder reduces waste to 5-15%.
  • Don't overfill. If cattle are leaving feed, you're giving them too much. Reduce the ration.
  • Feed at the right height. Bunk feeders should be at chest height for cattle. Too low wastes feed; too high makes it inaccessible.
  • Clean bunks regularly. Remove old, wet, or moldy feed before adding fresh feed.

How to Calculate Your Feed Waste

Track how much feed you purchase versus how much your cattle actually consume:

  1. Weigh or count bales at purchase.
  2. Track how many bales you feed per week.
  3. At the end of the season, compare purchased vs. fed.
  4. The difference is your waste (accounting for any left in storage).

If your waste exceeds 15%, your storage or feeding method needs improvement.

The Investment That Pays for Itself

A simple three-sided shed costs $3,000-$8,000 to build. If it saves you 15% on $15,000 of hay per year, it pays for itself in 2-5 years , and then saves you money every year after that.
